The 55 acre country estate has a long history as a residential property for various families. In 1938, it became the home of the Government Code and Cypher School.
City of Cambridge
The famous University City of Cambridge with its fabulous architecture lies on the banks of the River Cam. Evidence of farming in the area over 3000 years ago, the Romans established the town of Duroliponte on a small hill on the north side of the Cam. Over the following centuries, Anglo Saxons, Vikings and Normans left their mark on the city.
The University was founded in the early 13th Century and, today, has 150 departments, 12,000 staff and 24,000 students. Some of the 31 colleges line the banks of the River Cam which you can view from riverside walking paths or from the river itself, if you try your hand at punting.
Other buildings of note include the site of the Cavendish Laboratory where Crick and Watson identify the helical structure of DNA and Joseph Thomson discovers the electron.
