The oldest part of the monument is 5000 years old with the first stones estimated to have been erected about 2500BC, and it would appear to have been used as a burial ground, temple and a calendar. Although in a ruined condition, it is still an astonishing sight.

Allow for 2 hours at Stonehenge and it is approximately 1 hour to Avebury. En-route we lunch in a delightful country pub.

Avebury Ring

Sometimes known as Avebury Henge”, this is another pre-historic monument constructed about the same time as Stonehenge. It comprises a massive circular mound with a ditch about 1km in circumference. Within the enclosure, a stone circle of 101 stones was erected. There’ll be time to walk around the monument and also to stop at Silbury Hill, a huge pre-historic earthen mound, believed to be the largest in Europe and constructed about 2500bc.

About 45 minutes in Avebury it is about 2 hours back to London.
