The oldest part of the monument is 5000 years old with the first stones estimated to have been erected about 2500BC. Although in a ruined condition, it is still worth seeing. For centuries, the stones have been climbed on, chipped away at and re-erected. With visitor numbers increasing year on year, the need to preserve what remains led to the decision to not allow visitors into the stone circle. However, there are opportunities to go inside the stone circle before and after regular opening hours. Only a limited number of tickets are available and it is advisable to book as soon as possible.
